PREFACE

of the second revised edition.

Believing that a desire for greater knowledge of the Napoleonic era was noticeable not only in France but also in our country, Lieutenant-Colonel H. Th. Chappuis compiled a sketch of the "great Corsican." This expectation was not disappointed, as it soon became clear that a second edition would be necessary after a few years. The author had already begun the new revision when he passed away in the midst of his work.

I gladly accepted the publishers' request to continue the work, although I did not disguise the difficulty of completing a task that had already been started. I made grateful use of the observations made on the first edition.

May this second edition, now exclusively featuring large plates based on the most famous paintings, receive as favorable a reception as the first publication.
