Preface.

This translation of the FIRST BOOK of the “Lemegeton” which is now for the first time made accessible to students of TALISMANIC MAGIC was done, after careful collation and edition, from numerous Ancient Manuscripts in Hebrew, Latin, and French, by G. H. Fra. D.D.C.F., by the order of the Secret Chief of the Rosicrucian Order.[1] The G. H. Fra., having succumbed unhappily to the assaults of the Four Great Princes (acting notably under Martial influences), it seemed expedient that the work should be brought to its conclusion by another hand. The investigation of a competent Skryer into the house of our unhappy Fra., confirmed this divination; neither our Fra. nor his Hermetic Mul. were there seen; but only the terrible shapes of the evil Adepts S.V.A.[2] and H., whose original bodies having been sequestered by Justice, were no longer of use to them. On this we stayed no longer Our Hand; but withdrawing Ourselves, and consulting the Rota, and the Books M. and Q. did decide to ask Mr. Aleister Crowley, a poet, and skilled student of Magical Lore, and an expert Kabbalist, to complete openly that which had been begun in secret.[3] This is that which is written: “His Bishoprick let another take.” And again: “Oculi Tetragammaton.” This is also that which is said: “Nomen Secundum refertur ad Gebhurah; qui est Rex Bittul atque Corruptio Achurajim Patris et Matris hoc indigitatur.”

And so saying we wish you well.

Ex Deo Nascimur. In Jesu Morimur. Per S.S. Reviviscimus.

Given forth from our Mountain of A., this day of C.C. 1903 A. D.

The following text is the FIRST BOOK of the Lemegeton of Solomon, commonly called the Goetia, being an exact translation of the manuscript described in the Preface.

It is essential to understand that this work pertains to the operative, or ceremonial, branch of Magick, and should not be confused with the theoretical or speculative branches, though a true understanding of the latter is necessary for the successful practice of the former.

The student must apply himself to the study of the Kabalah, and the various branches of the Occult Sciences, particularly Astrology, Geomancy, and the understanding of the Sacred Language. Without this foundational knowledge, all attempts at operation will be futile and likely to lead the experimenter into delusions or dangers of a metaphysical nature.

The powers of the Invisible World are vast and subject to strict laws. The names of God, the Divine Names, and the sigils of the Spirits are keys, not mere passwords, and they operate through vibratory resonance, demanding purity of intention and absolute precision in execution.

The spirits enumerated herein are the Infernal Cohort, the Dukes, Marquises, Presidents, and Kings of the Infernal Hierarchy, who were subjected by the wisdom and authority of King Solomon. The magician, acting as the appointed vicegerent of the Divine Will, uses these keys to command obedience, not for personal aggrandizement, but for the attainment of specified knowledge or the performance of necessary tasks.

This text is divided into sections pertaining to the Hierarchy of Hell, the description of the Spirits, their seals, and the necessary preparations for their Conjuration.

The Testimony of the Spirits

Before proceeding to the enumeration of the Spirits, it is necessary to understand the authority by which the Magician acts. The authority derives from the Divine Names and the hierarchy that ascends from the physical plane up to the source of all Being.

The Magician must be duly prepared through fasting, purification, and the sanctification of the Circles and the Tools. The primary purpose of these operations is the command of the subordinate intelligences through the superior power vested in the Magician by his alignment with the Highest Good.

The description of the Spirits follows the traditional enumeration, beginning with the President, Bael.

The Seventy-Two Spirits of the Goetia

The Great Key of Solomon speaks of the necessity of inscribing the Seals upon appropriate metals, corresponding to the planetary hours and the days appointed for the Evocation. The general rule for the preparation of the Circle and the Triangle of Art must be adhered to strictly.

The first Spirit mentioned in the enumeration is:

1. Bael

The First Principal Spirit is Bael. He appeareth in divers shapes, sometimes like a Man, sometimes like a Cat, sometimes like a Toad, and sometimes all these together. He speaketh with a voice hoarse.

He reigneth in the East, and commandeth Sixty-six Legions of Spirits principally of the East Wind.

He giveth the power of making men invisible, and granteth wisdom and cunning. He answereth truly concerning things past, present, and to come, but he requireth that the Invoker shall pay him reverence, either by offering sacrifice or by some other homage.

He is of the Order of the East, and his appearance is sometimes like a King, sitting upon a stool, or riding upon one of the aforementioned beasts.
