Mr Honey's Medium Business Dictionary (German-English)

This is a work in progress dictionary of phrases commonly used. This book contains English and equivalent German phrases. We are releasing two versions of this book, sorted for the English reader and sorted for the German reader.

History and Philosophy

The beginnings of this dictionary go back to the time when England wanted to join the European Community.

In a joint effort by the BBC, the British Council, the Dept. of Educ. and the OUP, thoughts were given to how the future management in the continent could be taught the English language of business.

As one of the few lecturers teaching business English in London at the time, I came into contact with the project.

Since I had to choose between a career in data processing or as a university lecturer for business English at that time, I chose a combination of both.

As a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences, I made the use of multimedia in teaching practical business English my task.

For the requirements of various seminars, specializations, and target groups, the word lists and dictionaries arose from practical work.

Having grown up and been trained in the practical way of thinking of A.S. Hornby, a Fellow of University College London, I placed particular importance on the high number of useful application examples.

The indexed sequential word lists of the compact versions, --different and in my opinion much better--the large sequential word lists of the CD-ROM versions with stepwise to global search in the word and example lists of increasing scope, enable optimal linguistic orientation in an extensive vocabulary of business language.

In doing so, I see new ways and possibilities for acquiring and dealing with specialized language.

Probably there is much more here than can be guessed at first glance. It should be possible to learn more playfully, more easily, faster, and more intensively.

Due to the multitude of associations, an advanced competence in specialized language should develop faster than before.
