{{The snow lay deep and heavy on the narrow street, and a biting wind swept through the little town of Feldberg. It was a village nestled in the Thuringian Forest, a place where winter held its grip with a fierce tenacity. The houses, with their steep gabled roofs, were buried almost to their eaves in snowdrifts, and the only sounds were the mournful creak of the wind in the pines and the occasional muffled thud of snow sliding from a roof.

In one of these houses, a cozy little parsonage with smoke curling cheerfully from its chimney, sat a young man named Karl. He was a student of theology, spending his Christmas holidays with his uncle, the village pastor. Karl was a dreamer, a lover of books and quiet contemplation, and he found a certain peace in the snowbound stillness of Feldberg.

He sat by the hearth, a well-worn volume of Goethe open on his lap, but his gaze was fixed on the dancing flames. His thoughts, however, were not entirely on the poet’s verses. A sense of unease, a vague premonition, had been gnawing at him for days. It was as if the very silence of the snow-laden world held a secret, a whisper of something yet to come.

Suddenly, a sharp rap echoed through the house, startling Karl from his reverie. It was an unusual sound in this quiet place, especially at this hour. His uncle, a kind old man with a benevolent smile, looked up from his own reading.

"Who could that be on such a night?" he murmured, his brow furrowed with mild surprise.

The rapping came again, more insistent this time. Karl rose and went to the door. He unbolted it, and a blast of icy wind swept into the warm room, extinguishing the lamp on the hall table. In the flickering firelight from the parlor, Karl could make out a figure standing on the doorstep, cloaked and hooded, their face obscured by the shadows.

"Who are you?" Karl asked, his voice a little unsteady.

The figure did not reply immediately. They seemed to hesitate, then slowly raised a gloved hand and pointed a trembling finger towards the dark, snow-covered path leading away from the village.

"There," a voice, thin and reedy, finally emerged from the depths of the hood, "they wait."

Karl felt a chill that had nothing to do with the wind. "Who waits?" he asked. "And for whom?"

The figure simply shook their head, a gesture of profound weariness. Then, with a sudden, jerky movement, they turned and stumbled away into the swirling snow, disappearing as quickly as they had appeared.

Karl stood frozen for a moment, the cold air seeping into his bones. He closed the door, his hand trembling slightly. He returned to the parlor, where his uncle was now relighting the lamp.

"A strange visitor," Karl said, trying to keep his voice calm. "They spoke of someone waiting, out there in the snow."

His uncle sighed. "This is a wild place in winter, Karl. The snow can play tricks on the eyes and ears. Perhaps it was just a traveler, lost and seeking shelter."

But Karl knew it was more than that. The figure's words, their spectral appearance, had lodged themselves in his mind. He couldn't shake the feeling that something significant had just occurred, a turning point in the quiet rhythm of his holiday. He looked out of the window at the impenetrable white curtain that hid the world beyond, and a shiver ran down his spine. The snow, which had seemed so peaceful, now felt ominous, a silent harbinger of unknown events.}}
